I often refer to an old Italian saying:
“When pain outweighs pleasure, it is time to stop.”
(In other contexts, this idea is also referred to as “stop loss.”)
While browsing the internet, I came across a humorous variation:
“If the hassle outweighs the fun, ditch the lass and grab a pint of Lambrusco!”
(In Italian, the rhyme works well.)
Lambrusco, a wine from Northern Italy, was once considered a simple tavern drink—affordable and perfect for drowning one’s sorrows. However, in recent years, wine connoisseurs have recognized its quality, elevating its status.
I attempted to capture the rhyme and rhythm of the original Italian phrase in English, but poetry is not my forte.
So, I decided to enlist the help of AI to refine the rhymes.
After some back-and-forth, we (that is, yours truly and the AI) came up with these versions:
- “If it is more strife than delight, drop the bird and sip some white!”
- “If the toil is not worth the thrill, ditch the girl and drink your fill!”
- “If the hassle kills the cheer, drop the dear and grab a beer!”
