
Occam’s Razor
William of Occam, a 14th-century Franciscan friar, left us a principle as self-evident as it is often ignored:
“Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem.”
In plain English:
“Do not multiply entities beyond necessity.”
Today, this principle is widely used in scientific, logical, and investigative contexts, often expressed as:
“All else being equal, the simplest explanation is to be preferred.”
What we now call Occam’s Razor – also known as the “principle of parsimony or economy” – is a methodological rule advising that, when faced with several equally valid explanations, one should favour the simplest.
The image of the “razor” is apt: it invites us to cut away unnecessary assumptions cleanly and decisively.
This principle, now regarded as one of the foundations of modern scientific thought, does not claim to determine which theory is true, but rather which is preferable when competing explanations offer the same explanatory power – the one that rests on the fewest assumptions.
To be fair, the insight was not Occam’s alone. Long before him, thinkers such as Aristotle, Ptolemy, Duns Scotus, Maimonides, and Robert Grosseteste had proposed similar ideas.
But let us be clear: simple does not mean shallow or naïve.
In this context, simplicity is not the simplicity of gut feeling or lazy thinking, but a disciplined clarity – a deliberate stripping away of what is unnecessary without compromising plausibility.
Occam’s Razor is not a metaphysical grooming tool, but a mental scalpel.
From medicine to physics, from philosophy to computer science, it helps trim away needless complexity – and keeps conspiracy theorists in check by discouraging baroque theories stitched together with digital string and paranoia.
Crucially, it is not a dogma. It is a tool – helpful, but not infallible.
Simplicity is not the same as truth, but it is a solid starting point if we wish to avoid drowning in elegant nonsense.
As Einstein famously put it, a theory should be as simple as possible… but no simpler.
And when necessary, the razor can always be sharpened.
