Open your mind before your mouth

“Open your mind before your mouth.”
(Epictetus)

A piece of timeless wisdom, distilled into a single, razor-sharp phrase.

If only humanity had truly embraced it—imagine the utopia we could be living in: a world where social media remained eerily silent, dinner table discussions were thoughtful and measured, and political debates actually made sense.

Unfortunately, reality tells a different story.

We have perfected the skill of speaking first and thinking… well, rarely, if ever.
Why bother with the tedious effort of reflection when a quick-witted retort, an unfounded opinion, or an enthusiastically misguided argument is always ready to spill out? After all, silence can be uncomfortable, and who has time for self-awareness when there are debates to dominate and hot takes to broadcast?

Perhaps Epictetus, a Greek Stoic philosopher, was simply ahead of his time—an ancient Stoic, dismayed as his fellow citizens blurted out nonsense, yearning for a world where people engaged their minds before unleashing their words.

If only he could witness us now.
